We all know that kissing is our way of showing affection. Kisses feel so amazing because our lips are just filled with nerve endings, making them ultra sensitive especially when coupled with the strong emotions you feel for that special someone.
But what you might not know is that kissing not only feels good, it is also good for your health! Let's dive straight into some reasons for you to KISS more ;)
1. KISSING BURNS CALORIES
According to Livestrong.com, kissing can potentially burn up to 120 calories per hour! Well obviously it isn't going to be a good enough replacement for a workout session, but still!
2. KISSING TONES YOUR FACIAL MUSCLES
Did you know that kissing involves 34 facial muscles and 112 postural muscles? 'Nuff said. Let's get working towards that sharp face!
3. KISSING HELPS YOU FIGHT CAVITIES
In our previous article here, we mentioned that oral bacteria thrives when there is lack of saliva production in our mouths, leading to problems from bad breath to cavities.
During kissing, there is an increase of saliva production, therefore decreasing the likelihood of dry mouths for oral bacteria to multiply rapidly. In addition, increasing the amount of saliva can sweep away food debris that can build up and become plaque.
4. KISSING RELEASES "HAPPY" HORMONES
Almost like magic, kissing triggers our brains to release a potion bottle full of "happy" chemicals like serotonin, dopamine, and oxytocin. Interestingly, oxytocin is even known as the "Love Hormone".
These hormones play a huge part in relieving stress, and improving our general happiness.
And guess what, 20 seconds of kissing is enough to create this "magic mix"!
5. KISSING REDUCES BLOOD PRESSURE
Kissing dilates our blood vessels, thereby reducing blood pressure. This also helps to relieve pain from headaches and menstrual cramps.
6. KISSING IMPROVES IMMUNITY
Apparently, during kissing 80 million bacteria is transferred between you and your partner in just 10 seconds! THAT definitely makes him or her the special someone eh?
That might sound gross, but scientists have discovered that this could actually be a good thing! According to this article on Time, we can improve our immunity by being exposed to more microorganisms and building up resistance against them.
DISCLAIMER: Of course this concept works only when you have a healthy kissing partner...
7. KISSING HELPS REDUCE ALLERGIES IN OUR RESPIRATORY TRACTS
Based on a study conducted by scientists based in Satou Hospital of Japan, a kiss that lasts for 30 minutes can reduce the production of histamine, which is a chemical that the body produces in response to pollen, causing the sneezing, runny noses and streaming eyes that characterise hay fever attacks.
Dr Hajime Kimata, who conducted the research, said: "The results indicate for the first time that kissing may alleviate allergic responses."
